UTP 8 is a basic coated electrode of the ENi-Cl type for cold welding of cast iron. The manufacturer intended it for grey and malleable cast iron and for cast steel, and also for joining these materials to steel, copper and copper alloys, above all in repair and maintenance work.
The pool can be guided calmly, so welding goes without spatter, in all positions and at a low current. The weld together with the transition zone can be worked with a file, and the toes come out without undercut. The manufacturer recommends combining this electrode with the ferronickel UTP 86 FN: you butter with UTP 8 and fill with UTP 86 FN.

Cold welding means working in short beads a few centimetres long, with pauses for cooling, so touch the casting with a gloved hand and stop when it starts to burn. Peen every bead with a hammer as soon as you have chipped the slag, to take out the shrinkage stresses. Drill the ends of a crack in cast iron and grind the groove down to sound material. Keep the current at the lower limit and the electrode on the negative pole.
