The protective window is the most frequently replaced part in a laser. It shields the lens from spatter and metal vapour, and its condition directly affects the power reaching the material. A dirty or scorched window scatters the beam, reduces penetration and heats up until it cracks and damages the lens, which costs many times more.
Check the window at every shift. Welding mild steel with heavy spatter, replacement can be needed several times a day; on stainless steel with clean edges it lasts far longer. Change it in a clean place, wearing gloves, because a fingerprint on the optic burns in at the first start.
The nozzle is matched to the mode of work. Welding with beam oscillation uses a different geometry from linear welds, and welding with filler adds a wire guide. A mechanically damaged nozzle disturbs the shielding gas stream and gives oxidised, dark welds on stainless steel.
The gas and cooling circuits have wear parts too. Seals in the head lose tightness and metal vapour then settles on the optics. Change the cooler water filter as the manufacturer recommends, because an overheated head loses its focal setting.
