UTP hardfacing consumables

Consumables for hardfacing and reclamation from the former UTP line, today marked as WEARtig for TIG rods, WEARmig for solid wires and WEARcore for flux-cored and submerged arc wires. Deposits resistant to abrasion, impact, corrosion and high temperature, with hardness from about 200 HB up to over 60 HRC. For every item we give the deposit hardness, the EN 14700 or DIN 8555 classification and the former UTP designation, so that it can still be found.

UTP hardfacing consumables: how to choose

Hardfacing is chosen for the type of wear, not for hardness alone. Against mineral abrasion, that is sand, gravel and coal, chromium carbide deposits with a hardness of 55 to 65 HRC do well, for example from the WEARcore Dur and WEARshield families. Under impact a hard and brittle deposit cracks, and what you need is a manganese weld metal of the 14 percent Mn type, which work hardens under load from about 200 to 500 HB.

For metal to metal wear, as in plain bearings, rollers and guides, the WEARmig and WEARcore Tool tool alloys with a hardness of 40 to 60 HRC are used, and for work at high temperature the cobalt alloys formerly known as CELSIT, today WEARtig Co and WEARmig Co.

The buffer layer matters. On steel with poor weldability, on manganese cast steel and on parts working under impact loads, you first lay an austenitic buffer of the 307 or 309L type, and only then the working layer. Without the buffer a hard deposit flakes off together with the parent material.

The number of layers matters too: full deposit hardness is usually reached only in the second or third layer, because the first one mixes with the parent material.

Watch the naming. In 2025 the manufacturer changed the designation of 76 items, for example the former UTP A Dur 600 is today WEARtig Dur 600, and UTP A 73 G2 is WEARmig Tool 55. In the product listings we give both names.
