Solid MIG/MAG wires: how to choose

Selection starts with the grade of the parent material. For S235 and S355, G3Si1, that is ER70S-6, is enough. If the joint has to reach a higher yield strength, take G4Si1, at Böhler EMK 8 in the classification G 46 4 M21 4Si1. For fine-grained steels S460 to S700 you move to the alform family, and for quenched and tempered steels up to 1100 MPa to alform 900 and 960.

For stainless steels: 308L for grades 304 and 304L, 316L for 316 and 316L, 347 for grades stabilised with titanium or niobium, 309L for dissimilar joints and for the buffer layer in cladding. Duplex 2205 is welded with CN 22/9 N wire, superduplex 2507 with CN 25/9 CuT.

For aluminium you match the wire to the alloy: AlSi 5 and AlSi 12 for castings and silicon alloys, AlMg 4.5 Mn and AlMg 5 for the 5000 series magnesium alloys, Al 99.7 for commercial purity aluminium. The liner has to be PTFE, the rollers U grooved, and the torch lead short.

Match the diameter to the current and the position. A 0.8 mm wire works across 60 to 180 A and suits thin sheet and out of position work. A 1.0 mm wire from 90 to 260 A is the most universal diameter. A 1.2 mm wire from 120 to 350 A gives the highest deposition rate on heavier sections.
